Global airline trade body urges governments to begin planning for vaccine distribution as it warns of potentially severe capacity constraints in transporting by air
The International Air Transport Association has said that delivering COVID-19 vaccines will be “the mission of the century for the global air cargo industry”, and that it won’t happen without careful advanced planning.

The trade organization calculated that the potential size of the delivery just to provide a single dose to 7.8 billion people would fill 8,000 Boeing 747 freighter aircraft. That’s just under 6,000,000m³ – equivalent to two and a half times the Great Pyramid of Giza or 2,500 Olympic swimming pools.

Alexandre de Juniac, IATA’s director general and CEO, said: “We urge governments to take the lead in facilitating cooperation across the logistics chain so that the facilities, security arrangements and border processes are ready for the mammoth and complex task ahead.”

Vaccines must be handled and transported in line with international regulatory requirements, at controlled temperatures and without delay to ensure the quality of the product. As a result, the level of planning is considerably higher than standard cargo shipments.

The IATA says considerations need to be made regarding cold chain facilities, security and border processes. Capacity is another major concern as the trade body is calling on governments to consider the current diminished cargo capability of the global air transport industry.

The pandemic has forced many airlines to put their larger widebody aircraft into long-term storage thus reducing the global belly freight volume.


Juniac added: “Even if we assume that half the needed vaccines can be transported by land, the air cargo industry will still face its largest single transport challenge ever. In planning their vaccine programmes, particularly in the developing world, governments must take very careful consideration of the limited air cargo capacity that is available at the moment. If borders remain closed, travel curtailed, fleets grounded and employees furloughed, the capacity to deliver life-saving vaccines will be very much compromised.”

The IATA – which is based on Montreal, Canada – represents some 290 airlines, comprising 82% of global air traffic.

They make it sound like production of the vaccine will happen overnight. Vaccine production is going to take time and I'm sure the Air Cargo industry will be able to keep up with how quick it's being made available for shipment.

Several companies don't wait -- they've started mass production on the risk of having to destroy it. Some governments have backed those companies.

Being realistic it will take a year to produce, distribute and administer this vaccine. Sticking the needle in is the more likely bottleneck and vaccines have a shelf life and need cold storage..
So at one flight a day that's 8,000/365 ... 22 747s.
I'm sure they'll cope somehow.

Who's doing the maths?
You can fit about 45 thousand vials on a standard Euro pallet. More if they are 2R vials.
The main deck of a 47 cargo will hold 30 2.4 x 3.2 pallets, so about 270 Euro pallets worth.
That's over 12 million vials. On one plane.
So it's more like 660 aircraft. Not 8 thousand.

I think something I would take away from this the article is that a strong sense to think emotionally and erratically around problems versus calmly and rationally is present. I agree with a lot of the notes provided earlier in this thread that there is a bit of a hot-headed thinking going on at the moment. Let cooler heads prevail by not getting people in a panic and doing careful strategic planning on distribution. Good discussion BTW.

I read it at least for Serum Institute of India -- they did it in an effort to cut about 6 months on having 40 million shots ready to go (for those who speak German -- https://www.tagesschau.de/ausland/indien-corona-impfstoff-101.html, German News as of 2020-05-02).

I agree w/ Plague that the logistics of getting it into the people might turn out to be the bigger bottleneck.

I do agree that people should look at all situations with a cool head; its part of being a pilot. I was hoping someone (a cargo pilot, for example) would do the math, because they have more knowledge in this sort of situation.

Also:

If you have the newest version of Microsoft Edge (or Google Chrome) on a laptop/desktop (maybe even on a mobile device), it will have a pop-up in the top right-hand corner asking if you want it in English.
